Scrumban is a crossover between Scrum and Kanban. It integrates scrum's focus on project management and product delivery with Kanban's pull system, workflow mapping and processing optimization. When properly applied, Scrumban can allow a team benefit from both Scrum's prescriptive and Kanban's freedom to improve their operations.

As mentioned, Scrumban basically combines the two framework 'Scrum' and 'Kanban.' It aims to bridge the gap between Scrum and Kanban for the teams that find the Scrum too rigid and the Kanban too adaptable. Scrumban primarily follows the scrum backlog approach of planning, prioritizing, distributing work and also adds Kanban board to assist teams, visualize the plan work and pinpoint inefficiencies. Scrumban frequently uses Kanban principles to limit the amount of work that can be completed at any given moment. Using this method, a team will start a set amount of task once and then only initiate other works when some of those activities already listed are finished ,prior to starting the new ones.

While looking at a standard Scrumban process, the team produces a project backlog of all the known requirements, features and results at the start of the project. Before each iteration or sprint, new needs are introduced as they are discovered. The team develops Work In Progress (WIP), which is a list of all the items from the backlog that they aim to complete in the next iteration. ‘Work In Progress’ and the ‘to-do’ column are kept on the Scrumban board. When the team is ready to start a new task, they take something from the 'to-do' column, initiate the work and then move it to the 'in progress' column and lastly, it is transferred to the ‘done’ column once it's finished. After the work is finished, then only the team moves on to the next task. Even if the iteration isn't over yet, if the number of activities in the 'to-do' column is very low, a planning meeting can be arranged and then more work is added if required. The team members attend daily stand-up meetings throughout the project to discuss what they have accomplished in the previous 24 hours, what they plan to accomplish in the next 24 hours and any challenges they are encountering.

In a nutshell, agile is all about being adaptable to your team/project's needs and in it Scrumban is a project management framework that incorporates key elements from two famous agile methodologies: Scrum and Kanban. It combines Scrum's structure and predictable procedures with Kanban's flexibility to improve team’s mobility, efficiency, and productivity. As a result, not all agile teams use Scrumban in the same way.
